INTRODUCTION

How can furniture recreate the inviting nature of public chess tables?

Chess tables in New York City parks have been iconic fixtures since the mid-20th century, fostering a vibrant outdoor chess culture. These tables became popular gathering spots for players of all skill levels, contributing to the city's history of public recreational spaces and community engagement.

OBJECTIVE To create a sustainable and compact seating design under 12-inch cube.

IDEATIONI aimed to explore forms that would offer seamless gameplay and prioritize ergonomics for an enjoyable experience. The subtle curves on the seat provide comfort while the pointed corners prevent the seat from touching the ground.

PROCESS

Through various paper and foam sketch models, I explored the optimal size for the chessboard and seats. The board had to be large enough to accommodate smooth game play, yet compact to fit within a 12” cube.

Due to it’s regenerative nature and durability, I chose to work with cork my the primary material.
