Modular & multi-functional seat with an interlaid chess/checkers board. Designed to bring together board game enthusiasts while creating shared memories.

Research

Chess tables in New York City parks have been iconic fixtures since the mid-20th century, fostering a vibrant outdoor chess culture. These tables became popular gathering spots for players of all skill levels, contributing to the city's history of public recreational spaces and community engagement.

Objective

Inspired by the charm of public chess tables, I decided to combine seating with a game board in a compact, under-12-inch cube design that would fosters closer interactions among players.

I chose to work with cork as the primary material due to its sustainability and durability.

Ideation

Process

Through various paper and foam sketch models, I explored the optimal size for the chessboard and seats. The board had to be large enough to accommodate smooth game play, yet compact to fit within a 12” cube.
